The best private dining rooms in Brooklyn

Have you ever arrived at a restaurant with a reservation, but it's mysteriously nonexistent on their server? How about getting into a packed restaurant, but you can't hear the person next to you? Good restaurants are popular because they are good, but that comes with the caveat of everyone wanting to try it for themselves. Especially in Brooklyn, NYC’s most populous borough, there’s a lot of competition – but also a lot of creativity and culture.

1. A private dining room near the Brooklyn waterfront: Vinegar Hill House

Brooklyn, New York

An outdoor garden with a cherry tree, a fireplace, and a historic carriage house are a few characteristics of this Brooklyn private dining room. Accommodating 9 to 32 seated guests and 45 guests for a cocktail reception, the quaint area and wood-fired oven dishes are fit for an intimate gathering. You can enjoy unique New American fare, like monkfish, charred octopus, and celery root.

We all know the unpredictability of the weather in the city, so it's important to remember that the garden has heaters but is not covered, and the sidewalk seating does not have heaters but is covered.

2. A Brooklyn private dining room that goes back 125 years: Gage & Tollner

Brooklyn, New York

Gage & Tollner has had quite the reputation in Brooklyn for over a century, but on Valentine's Day in 2004, it shut its doors until reopening in 2021. This Brooklyn private dining room is rich in history and has two spaces modeled after Victorian parlors, decorated with two ornamental marble fireplaces and chandeliers.

The space can hold 10 to 100 guests, and parties of 8 to 10 need to order the prix-fixe family-style menu in advance. They serve staple dishes, including a raw bar, steaks, and chicken dishes. If you leave enamored with the establishment, you can even purchase a tote bag that states, "The very famous restaurant in Brooklyn."

3. Simple, satisfying, stegosaurus: Dino

Brooklyn, New York

Growing up, one food garnered more praise than most. The moment it was placed in front of you, it felt like winning the spelling bee or receiving a gold star– two words: dino nuggets. We hate to break it to you, but despite it’s name, this Brooklyn restaurant doesn’t serve these highly coveted treats. Instead, it has a range of Northern Italian classics and an upstairs private dining room.

Dino has a flexible layout and offers multiple packages for seated parties of 10 to 30 guests and cocktail receptions of 40 guests. If your group exceeds this number, you can rent the main restaurant and garden. While groups of 10-12 need to select a prix-fixe menu before arrival, its family-style menu is for all other groups.

4. Step into the Italian Renaissance at this Brooklyn private dining room: Leuca

Brooklyn, New York

It's hard to picture eating a three-course meal blindfolded, but that's exactly what you can do at Leuca during its sensory Dining in the Dark events. While this sounds mysterious and possibly challenging, it's also home to a Brooklyn private dining room that feels like you’ve stepped into a painting at the Sistine Chapel. The room seats 30 guests, and the walls are hand-painted frescoes embodying the Mediterranean.

Chef Andrew Carmellini serves family-style house-made pasta and wood-fired pizza. The private dining space has a separate cocktail bar and audiovisual features.

5. A Brooklyn private dining room for cozy Italian fare: Savelli

Brooklyn, New York

Dominck Palumbo started Savelli, combining his son's and nephew's names to create a truly authentic Italian experience, from homemade family dishes to artisanal Italian wines. There are two private dining rooms: the garden room, strung with lights and a rock waterfall (max. 40), and the cellar, a dim and intimate space (max. 50).

Prix-fixe menus and open bar options are available. When you leave and feel compelled to return soon after, Savelli has completed its mission.
